What is Messy Church?

Messy Church began in April 2004 in an Anglican church near Portsmouth. It is a church for families who find it hard to go to church on a Sunday, and a typical session would include craft activities, a short celebration and a meal.

We will be meeting approximately every 2 months at a time most suitable for the local people. Perhaps the most significant aspects are those of:
  • welcoming the whole family together not just the children
  • being a church not a club eating together
A session would typically include a welcome time, crafts, story and or song and a meal. The aims are:

  • to provide an opportunity for people of all ages to worship together
  • to help people of all ages feel they belong in church and to each other
  • to help people have fun and be creative together
  • to introduce Jesus through hospitality, friendship, stories and worship

Every Messy Church is unique and responsive both to God’s call to serve its own surrounding community and to the character of the existing church community there. It is not a template set in stone but a set of principles that seem to be welcomed universally.
The Messy Church concept has spread by means of the first Fresh Expressions DVD, the Messy Church books, the website www.messychurch.org.uk and training days. There are currently over 650 Messy Churches listed on the website and many more that are not listed.

There are Messy Churches in at least twelve countries and across the main Christian denominations.
Messy Church is enabled, resourced and supported by BRF (Bible Reading Fellowship), a Registered Charity, as one of its core ministries. BRF makes Messy Church freely available and derives no direct income from the work that it does to support it both in the UK and abroad. BRF’s full-time Messy Church Team in turn supports a network of Regional Coordinators, volunteers who are available to encourage and advise on Messy Church in their local area.
